Millie Smethurst- BA (Hons) Textiles in Practice
A Mother's Love
I am a textiles designer & maker specialising in knitted materials. My final degree project explores the knitted translation of emotions and memories through the use of colour, fibre's and forms. Inspired by my personal relationship with my own mum, this work aims to provide a welcoming and vibrant outcome. Working with a selection of my own emotions alongside a colour palette formed through childhood photos, I experimented on the dubied and domestic machines with how these emotions could begin to visualise.
This project also works with handmade clay charms based upon shared memories with my mum, which were then embedded into my knitting, aiming to higlight our years of memories and honour my cherished relationship with my mum.
Within my practice, I am continuously interested in the CMF relationship and how slight adjustments between the three can end up providing a entirely different outcome. This interest led to me developing a practice that consists of a more technical hands on approach. By utisling various hand techniques, I aspire to produce materials that leave viewers with a curiosity of the process. To me, working in a slower, handcrafted method feels innate to the textiles craft.
