The Hidden Magpie

This installation reflects my childhood fascination with jewellery, shiny treasures and trinkets where I collected and hid everything I found like a magpie.  My practice is inspired by my love of nature and the outdoors, drawing inspiration from  textures and patterns found within organic materials.

Some pieces contain a hidden cubic zirconia stone to add small points of sparkle and create a sense of natural curiosity.  Others contain replicas of my childhood keepsakes, found objects belonging to me and vintage items from my late grandmother.

Working primarily in brass, I use the traditional heritage craft of investment casting to transform natural found objects into jewellery, preserving their original forms and giving them a new permanence.

The small trinkets communicate a ‘child-like’ playfulness of picking up objects and taking them home to add to my collection in my younger years, showing the journey to adulthood and my current practice.
