Roots
I am drawn to interiors that bring people together and create meaningful moments of connection. My work explores how space, material and everyday experiences can influence the way we interact, participate and feel a sense of belonging.
Roots explores social connection through the shared experiences of growing, cooking and eating. Set within Manchester’s Mackie Mayor, the project creates an inclusive community space where wheelchair users and people with differing abilities can come together, learn new skills and build relationships.
Inspired by the interconnected nature of plant root systems, the design connects growing, harvesting, cooking and dining into one continuous journey. Accessible growing pods, a community garden, teaching kitchen, workshop and communal dining spaces encourage participation while allowing people to engage at their own pace.
Through tactile materials, natural elements and carefully considered furniture and spatial layouts, Roots creates opportunities for interaction without making accessibility feel separate or restrictive.
The project explores how interiors can support social accessibility, creating spaces where people are not simply able to enter, but are able to participate, connect and belong.
