Sophie York- MFA Fine Art
Sophie York (b.1979, Staffordshire, England) is a Manchester based artist Her practice explores ephemerality and permanence through paintings derived from cropped fragments of vintage magazines. She removes images from their original narratives, allowing them to exist as both object and illusion, imagery once produced for rapid consumption is slowed down and transformed into something singular and enduring.
During her MFA at the Manchester School of Art, York became fascinated with traditional painting methods and techniques. Currently working on fluorescent pink grounds, York builds thin layers of transparent paint and glaze over a grisaille underpainting to create hazy, dreamlike surfaces, Edges dissolve, forms soften, creating a tension between seduction and disruption. By reworking mass-produced imagery through paint, York reintroduces a sense of aura, touch, and physical presence, while asking what is preserved, romanticised, or lost when images are revisited.
Central to the work is an engagement with commodity fetishism and the seductive visual language of mid-century fashion photography and print culture. York is drawn to the distinct hue of mid-century photography, its softened palettes, cinematic warmth, and timeworn glamour, as well as the tactility and imperfection of analogue print media. Her paintings inhabit and interrogate this allure simultaneously, lingering on the ways desire is constructed through surface, gloss, and fragmentation.
Her work ultimately moves beyond simple childhood nostalgia and a fetish for ‘vintage’. Rather than longing for the past, York examines why we long for it, and what we hope to find there.
