As Berger said in 'Ways of Seeing' – "A woman must continually watch herself. She is continually accompanied by her own image of herself" (Pg 46). Intrigued by how these cinema tropes affect the way audiences perceive femininity. I want to know where the line between nature and performance lies in femininity.
Video artist Jen Brown investigates the implications of femininity in mid -20th century cinema and the association between femininity and violence on screen. Unfortunately, this association also being a tangible reality for women today, with horrific spiking endemic and the Everard and Nessa cases.
She is also curious whether nostalgia for old movies reflects a misunderstanding of these times, or something
suffocating about the present?
