If it weren't for this garden centre...
Alice Sunshine Crabtree is an analogue photographer currently based in Manchester; her practice works around the concept of social documentary photography. This means a main focus in her work involves building up relationships with the communities/individuals she is documenting, with the aim of creating a safe space where enthusiastic participation is encouraged. Her recent ongoing project ‘If it weren’t for this garden centre…’ includes medium format photographs from Hulme Community Garden Centre and the volunteers who keep the plants and local community thriving. The exhibited work consists solely of colour darkroom prints, as an analogue photographer processing and printing her own negatives is an essential part of her practice, as it allows her to reconnect with her photographs after the initial making of them.
