A Not-So-Traditional Vietnamese Áo Dài Inspired by the work of Paul Pierre Van Giap
My work as a knit designer focuses on colour compositions and texture, developing this into fashion context. The work that I have done this year has been inspired by the artwork of my late grandad Paul Pierre Van Giap. Looking at themes such as religion, culture, human form and The Vietnam War (as my great-grandad, PVG’s dad was Vietnamese) - imagery of issues that were all important to him, which he portrayed through his art. Playing with the silhouette of a very traditional Vietnamese Áo Dài I aim to celebrate him, address important issues, have meaning behind my work and play with translating paintings into knitted wearable textiles.
