The Female Gaze
I am an illustrator and printmaker from Brighton. My practice is led by research into themes surrounding modern-day femininity and the representation of women in the media. My work ranges from screenprints and risograph prints to darkroom photography and digital illustration.
‘The Female Gaze’ is inspired by my research into Male Gaze theory and how I can use illustration to create a positive representation of women and their bodies. Through my research, I explored Joey Soloway’s Female Gaze theory and its three defining principles: Returning the Gaze, the Gazed Gaze and Feeling Seeing, which I incorporate into my work. During this project I have explored femininity, gender, sexuality and the Male Gaze and have tried to gain an insight into how women wish to be portrayed in illustration and the media in general.
