Ani Orujyan- BA (Hons) Graphic Design
I am a multidisciplinary graphic designer who loves incorporating my culture and heritage within my design practice. From typography, to motion, to coding and even textiles, I am fascinated with learning new ways to broaden my skillsets as a designer. Having a fine-art background and completing a design degree, my project outcomes have ranged from exhibitions and instillations to branding and UI/UX.
I enjoy recontextualising traditional MENA aesthetics in a contemporary lens. An example of this is my ‘Shyrdak’ typeface which explore the textiles trades of Central Asia. In projects such as ‘Brick by Brick’ - 3D print festival branding, I wanted to highlight the region I grew up in and the attempted erasure of its heritage and infrastructure. Using design to articulate my lived experience and spotlight my community has always been at the forefront of my motivation. This is carried through to my 'Erevan' typeface inspired by the Armenian carpet trade, transforming textile symbols and patterns into a contemporary pixelated font.
Design to me, has always been about connecting others and conveying meaning, making something that others can interact with, whether this is through a playful or sensitive approach. Something that inspires change, provokes discussion and amplifies diverse perspectives.
