Planet Barnsley
A survivor of the future destructive state, Surveillance-Barnsley, clambered for spare parts to assemble their own independent computer. Technology in their world is designed to trap, catergorise and extract as much information, energy, and money as possible. This survivor found scrap materials to build a computer that functions removed from society: a cyberdeck. Within it they built a digital world intended to call those in the past to action, warning them not to repeat the mistakes of their reality. Their creation depicts a utopian landscape of how technology used responsibly can augment our society and not destroy it.
Barnsley born artist Cara Proud connects literature and art through immersive, interactive experiences. She combines her interest in speculative science fiction and extended reality to create interdisciplinary art games. Her upcoming solo exhibition at the Digital Media Centre in Barnsley November 2026, extends Planet Barnsley to capture how post-industrialisation in her hometown can be represented in a Moebius inspired utopian landscape.
