layers/upon/layers
layers/upon/layers is an exploration of memory, youth, and the moments that shape who we become. Inspired by films on the coming-of-age, and both the familial or romantic bonds we have, the work examines how memory becomes altered and changed. The original works have been taken and given new life by being physically edited, which visually reflects our mind’s imperfect recall by putting the films back together as a disjointed narrative. The artist mixes ink, collage and colour to bring the truths and disappointments of growing up to the audience’s focus- creating a moving image piece that feels familiar. Frames that capture both the intimacy and elusiveness of memory, offering a visual language for experiences that are deeply felt yet gone in a flash of the eye.
