Project 7:49, Part 1
Darwin-Gitonga is a multi-disciplinary artist completing her Masters in Photography. Having completed her undergraduate degree in Drama and Theatre Studies, with a minor in Visual Arts, she went to gain experience working on developing projects with the National Trust and Tate Exchange.
She then went to work as a freelance photographer, specialising in creative photography and portraits for publications, live events and other creative artists. Through the MA Photography course, her photographic practice has developed into a broader artistic practice, combining elements of scuplture and performance. Working in both film and digital photography, her creative research aims concern photography history, visual language and performance arts.
Her current project being exhibited in SODA, 'Project 7:49' is a work-in-progress installation that utilises moving image, photography and text to explore grief and loss. 'Project 7:49, Part 1' engages embodied grief through anecdotal materials such as diary entries, bodily experiences, and domestic objects. Attached to the project, is her piece "Untitled" which is part of a photographic series that explores the absence of a loved one in the domestic space. In the place of the deceased, Darwin-Gitonga navigates grief and loss through remnants of bodily matter that exist through memory and objects.
