Hannah Wheeler- BA (Hons) Fine Art
Hannah Wheeler’s abstract oil paintings transform fragments of everyday life into dreamlike, otherworldly compositions. Beginning with overlooked textures, colours, and moments from her surroundings, she uses photographs as points of departure, translating them into paint through layering, distortion, and gesture. Through this process, references dissolve, shifting into paintings that feel transcendent, each developing its own presence and atmosphere.
The works become amalgamations of memory rather than representations of place. Multiple moments are compressed into a single visual field, creating shifting, hallucinatory spaces where forms emerge and recede. She is drawn to expressive, intuitive mark-making, allowing the movement of paint to guide the transition from observed imagery to abstraction.
Sensuous and immersive qualities are central to her practice, both in colour and surface. These emerge through the physical act of painting, as layers build gradually, holding traces of time, gesture, and emotion. The resulting works sit between the tangible and the imagined, remaining in a constant state of transition.
Within the pace of contemporary life, her work offers moments of pause and immersion. By blending memory, sensation, and observation, the paintings open an atmospheric space that blurs reality and abstraction, encouraging a quiet engagement with feeling rather than certainty.
