Lithica Quarry

Hanne Ellemann’s current work originates from her photography of Lithica Quarry in Menorca. A space

that unveils itself to be both of monumental value and a void. The Quarry is an altering

landscape, what once was a mine left to be filled, developed into a repurposed site that has shifted

into an architectural and artistic environment. Humans have been able to and can create different

landscapes by modifying the land either permanently or temporarily. Through acts of selection,

reconfiguration and removal, the abstracted shapes move from their original state and go towards

indefinite presences, existing in an in-between state where there is a back and forth between function

and perception. Through exploratory processes of drawing, screen print, laser cut, image transfer and

installation, she finds their middle ground, often creating a sense of illusion, questioning exactly

what existed first and how it got there. With elements of interactive and

engaging installation that blends into the space, she is transforming this area into architecture that

is alive. The base of her work offers different points of perspectives from the same thing, origin

image. Her work offers visually interesting shapes and forms that give open interpretation to the

viewer that can exist on their own but also as a collective.
