Before The Honey

Before the Honey focuses on the beekeeping practices carried out by members of the Manchester and District Beekeeping Association in preparation for the active season. The quiet winter months leading into spring is often an overlooked season where much of the important maintenance takes place. By highlighting this, the work aims to create an awareness for the labour that exists outside of the expected active moments.

Through this publication, the physical and collaborative efforts involved in caring for bee colonies during this dormant period is explored. The photographs capture various maintenance procedures and interactions between people in the apiary, revealing an organised collective commitment and shared passion.

By focusing on the dedication of these volunteers across a more unseen period, the publication aims to shift the attention towards the unseen effort that is the backbone of beekeeping. Beekeeping is not just a hobby, but a community-driven act of care for local ecosystems.
