Stress - a global issue

Mental health is a global issue influenced by stress. As trends show increasing stress levels, resilience (the ability to adapt to and recover from stress) will play a key role in shaping mental wellbeing. Research shows that childhood is a critical stage for building resilience, and that participation in the arts supports mental wellbeing, emotional regulation and stress reduction.

Bloom – from stress to strength

Bloom is an inclusive creative hub, located in the market hall in the heart of Stockport. Accessed by multiple schools and users, it incorporates dance and art studios, wellbeing huts, and adaptable performance/communal areas, and aims to support children to grow, flourish, and feel emotionally, creatively, and socially connected.

Protagonist

In developmental psychology, flowers symbolise levels of sensitivity in children. Dandelions are resilient and adaptable; orchids are highly sensitive to their surroundings and tulip children lie between the two extremes.

Concept

Exploring this concept, Bloom is a metaphorical greenhouse, where children learn to express themselves, establishing roots, growing and blossoming, in a nurturing environment.

Journey

Areas are carefully designed to reflect the emotional journey of the user. Children enter through the open and welcoming reception and gradually establish roots in the nurturing wellbeing area. As they grow in confidence, they “break through the cracks”, “blooming” in dance and art studios, and eventually performing and flying away as stronger individuals.

Narrative

Central themes are reflected in structure and materiality throughout the space. Natural, sustainable materials, light and nature are prioritised and supported by shape and form. From arches representing resilience (bending without breaking), and inspired by Victorian architecture, the Stockport viaduct, and flower petals in bloom, to performance area lighting and perforated aluminium, symbolising the flight of dandelion seeds.

Designing for joy

Drawing on my Stress to Strength report, Bloom demonstrates how creative environments can support the global challenges of stress and mental wellbeing and illustrates the importance of designing for joy.
