Culling

Over the past year I have learnt to define and navigate my filmmaking passions through varied short form producing. Through creative experimentation and abstract idea development, I have developed my practice beyond simply logistical.

When creating my graduation project Culling, I sought to push the boundaries of student filmmaking by producing an ambitious period drama on a small budget. Set during the 17th century witch trials, Culling follows Grace as she flees persecution and takes refuge with two outcast women.

Using our Proof of Concept, I created and ran an online fundraiser alongside a social media campaign, helping to raise over £3,500. While grounding the production with a logistical approach, I facilitated bringing a directors vision to life through acquiring abstract locations and forming a talented crew.

I also engaged from a production and costume design perspective, helping to creatively construct the world in which our characters reside.

Culling was made possible through the endless help we received from countryside locals and our dedicated crew. This echoed the themes of community within the film, while reflecting filmmaking as an entirely collaborative medium.

University has given me the recourses to grow both within my craft, and as an individual. I hope to continue to develop my style and ethical framework as a producer, while building on my photography portfolio alongside.
