Amy Riley- BA (Hons) Fine Art
Amy May Riley‘s expanded painting practice is situated in processes of experimentation and material interplay, drawing upon found materials and appropriated imagery sourced from a vast digital archive. Wooden supports are cut apart and reassembled from scrap materials, creating a dialogue between the original digital screen image and its tactile reconstruction. References are mined from various media influences, such as film and music video stills, and obscured through painterly processes and altered colour palettes, suggestive of the fractured nature of memory. In her works, figures are frequently captured in moments of suspended movement, implying the still image and foregrounding the tension between motion and stasis in the act of painting. Themes of appropriation and repurposing mirror the circulation of media on the internet - a space that can feel intimate and personal yet is fundamentally collective. Within this environment, images are continuously produced, rediscovered, edited, and recirculated, accumulating new meanings and momentum as they gain traction. The dialogue between tactile materials and fleeting digital moments reflects her perception of the vast scope of digital culture and its influence on contemporary art.
