Freya is fascinated by the tactility of cloth and thread. Through these means – of cutting and stitching, weaving and folding – she seeks to share stories. Stories of landscapes and industries, people and technology, time and care – and the entanglement of it all. She wonders how, through connection and foresight, we can weave and repair the seams that have split open across our world.

Tales from the Rising Tides displays the workspace and folklore of a community who call themselves ‘The Menders’. They are floating through an unknown future, in an area previously known as the Northwest of England. Sea waters have risen, causing most of the land to become wetlands covered in intertwining rivers. But the weather is temperamental, and the rivers are prone to drying up at any given moment. While on ‘stable’ land conflict and mass technological surveillance have taken control, ‘The Menders’ have tried to find an escape in the rivers, floating along and living off what they find there. A community with care and creativity at the centre, they aren’t just surviving, they are finding joy and beauty where others see waste and decay.

The Sleepy Zine is a community project constructed and conceived by a group of five art and design students. A zine big enough to sleep in, its sheets are filled with work gathered from nearby and afar through open calls and workshops. We invite visitors to snuggle into the zine and explore its pages.
