Erosion

Hello!

I'm Sofia Laranjo, a non-binary Filmmaker and Musician from Portugal! Moving to the UK at 16 and since calling Manchester my home.

As the Sound Designer/Composer for Erosion I wanted to create a naturalistic environment emphasising the realism in order to build further the dissociative soundscape moment in the forest. Combining softness and subtlety with the gut-wrenching reality of our main character, allowing the audience to resonate with Evelyn’s grief. The original score, composed by me, accompanies and reinforces the sound design throughout the film. As a musician, I felt Erosion deserved an emotional and cohesive score that is designed to build tension, whilst immersing the audience in the film’s narrative.

My song 'Only At Night' wrapped Erosion as the credit song, an emotional song not originally thought of for the film, but ended up exploring similar themes.

As a Filmmaker/Director I’m interested in making narrative films depicting themes of human condition and connection in particular, queer relationships and identities. I’m interested in exploring how one interacts with the world around them and with each other.

My style often explores motion blur and golden lighting, as it’s visually appealing to me. I enjoy long takes that establish a character as I believe it can slow down a scene and bring the viewer a moment of reflection, specially combined with motion blur.

In my previous work ‘Undone’, ‘Covenant Healing’ and recently 'Contraponto', as well as in my photography work, I explore these themes, often focusing on young queer people’s stories.

My goals are to make art that can connect with people that feel their stories aren’t being told. I want to make art that explores desire, love, loss and the hardships of real life.
