Alison Duncan BA (Hons) Graphic Design
As a designer I would describe myself as playful, passionate, and a little bit peculiar. I gravitate mostly towards hand drawn type and bookbinding, but the constant itch to create means I’ve tried my hand at many different things.
Although graphic design as a whole is more digital than it has ever been, I find myself drawn back to the physical crafts that preceded this shift, studying signwriting and bookbinding alongside UI/UX and digital design in my final year.
‘The Unbound Library’ is an exploration of binding, encompassing both bookbinding and a more personal side of it. Each smaller collaged zine explores an idea important to me in my personal life or creative practice – something I am ‘bound’ to.
I also designed the typeface Gridbound, which is used throughout the book, both legibly and not. The lines and dots are representations of the stitching used to create letters on the spine.
I plan to keep adding to this book in the future.
