Megan Sparkes BA (Hons) Fine Art
I am Manchester based artist whose works are produced primarily with oil paint on canvas. The relationship between photography (including found images) and painting is a particular area of focus for me. For example, I consider photographic techniques such as cropping, angle and light direction important tools in the painting process. My practice focuses on figuration and employs themes of escapism, nostalgia and memory. My recent body of work depicts scenes from my mother’s childhood which is intended to provoke a kind of emotional resonance, not only to myself but to a wider audience. Through my use of source material, whether that is from screenshots or first-hand photographs I intensify a narrative through reproduction and encourage my paintings to picture elements of everyday life and the meaningful moments between human movement and intimate interaction.
