My practice is centred around responding to written text. I find story telling is most engaging when illustrated and written elements are intertwined, reacting and adding to what each has to say. I take pride in producing editorial images that add value to text and amplify its messages. My work is socially and environmentally conscious, focussing on engaging people with stories that can help us make the world a better place.

I produced an illustrated version of Wolodomyr Papuca’s biography Winter of the Wolf. This book was originally published by Book of My Life for Wolodomyr’s family. It is an important piece of social history, telling one man’s experience of growing up in Ukraine under Stalin and surviving Nazi occupation. I developed a digital style that mimicked traditional etching techniques to help ground the illustrations in the historical setting of the book. I kept the illustrations expressive and dark, reflecting the mood of the biography.

The other project I am presenting is the first issue of an environmental magazine called The Red Herring. This was a publication I designed and illustrated exploring the theme of water in scientific research news, fiction and poetry. The Red Herring was a passion project, exploring our complex relationship with water in the rapidly warming world. I worked with a wide variety of text sources, experimenting with playful layouts and adapting my editorial style to each spread’s unique creative challenges.
